Who will be able to live on campus?

All interested students are invited to apply to live on campus for summer and fall 2021. First-year students in academic year 2020-2021 will have priority for on-campus housing. Students in their second year at the start of fall 2021 are not required to live on campus during the 2021-2022 academic year. On-campus housing priority for fall 2021 is as follows:

  • Incoming first-year students who are required to live on campus for two years
  • Students who are guaranteed housing
  • Students who have approved housing accommodation requests
  • Housing insecure students, including international students
  • Second-year students
  • Third- and forth-year students who are interested in living on campus for the whole academic year

How many students will live on campus this fall semester?

The number of residential students for fall semester will depend on several factors, including how many students from the eligible groups choose to live on campus. The following groups will be eligible to live on campus:

  • Safe & Secure Housing: Scholars who identify that on-campus housing is the safest environment
  • Guaranteed Housing: Scholars who identify as Foster/Former Foster Youth, Homeless, and Regents Scholars
  • Student Success Housing: Scholars who identify on-campus housing as best environment to serve their success
  • Financially Secure Housing: Scholars who identify the need for on-campus housing as a needed resource given their financial situation

What changes have been made to on-campus housing?

To ensure the safety of residents, the following changes have been implemented:

  • COVID-19 mitigation measures will guide how many students are housed in each room.

  • Residents living on campus are be expected to adhere to UC Merced’s interim guidelines for wearing face coverings and maintaining physical distance, along with associated advisories from Merced County Department of Public Health

  • Residence hall buildings will be modified to include appropriate signage to promote safety and avoid the transmission of the virus, as well as furnishings being removed to ensure physical distancing in all common areas

  • Enhanced cleaning protocols implemented by the custodial team

  • Educational initiatives to encourage students to wear face coverings, wash their hands, and avoid close contact, crowded spaces, and to assist custodial staff in cleaning common areas.

We continue to partner with public health along with the City and County of Merced, to inform our practices to ensure the health and safety of residents. Note that plans are subject to re-evaluation and change based on guidance from health authorities and campus conditions.
